Abeille, a gesture for the local economy, a link with the community
Launched in 2019, the local currency L'Abeille is now a pillar of economic life in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Designed to strengthen ties between residents and merchants, this currency is a tool for local solidarity. By choosing to pay in Abeilles, users encourage exchanges within the community and actively support local businesses. The Abeille is available as a rechargeable card or mobile application, allowing users to easily manage their balance and transactions. Through this initiative, each purchase becomes an act of support for the city's entrepreneurs.
Technology and ease of use
Since the end of 2022, the management of the Abeille has been modernized with an application and a contactless card, both developed by local companies. This update allows users to top up their card online at any time, while offering fee-free transactions for both customers and merchants. With this local digital currency, more than 100 merchants and service providers are actively participating in this initiative, generating around one million francs per year.
Using L'Abeille means participating in a network of mutual aid and proximity to bring La Chaux-de-Fonds to life.
Where to spend the Abeille?
More than 120 businesses, bars, restaurants, and service providers in the city accept Abeille, creating a rich and diverse network. It can be spent in local produce shops, restaurants, artisans, bookstores, and much more. Some of these partners even offer special promotions for Abeille payments, encouraging users to favor this form of solidarity payment. A development plan also includes expanding the use of this currency at major local events and further expanding the network of partners.
